Turfgrass Tips: Benefits of Knowing Turfgrass Types

Learn to tell the differences between contrasting types of turfgrass. Turfgrass is the name of the grassy ground cover that is most often seen in many fields, roadsides, lawns and playgrounds. These grasses include many different varieties, each with its own strengths, weaknesses and growth patterns. Understanding the methods used to identify turf grass types is important in determining the type of turf grass on your lawn and can also help you figure out the best maintenance plan for your existing lawn

Determine which turfgrasses are native to your local area.Each region of the United States is part of a hardiness zone defined by the U.S.D.A. Consult a map of hardiness zones to learn the hardiness come for your local area.

Observe the growth season of the grass you wish to identify. Note whether the goon grows the most in the summer or in cooler seasons like fall or winter. Grasses which are most active in the spring and summer are called warm-season grasses, while grasses which grow actively in the fall or winter months are called cool-season grasses.
